The Death of Twitter?

by Puppet Master

If it weren’t for actual news headlines, I wouldn’t have believed it.

Twitter—elevated to the dizzying heights of social media rock stardom, has now been surrounded by equally alarming premonitions of doom.

“An abysmal 40% retention rate!” A tech tabloid screams. “Too much noise!” Says another.

Of course, then you’ve got the social media maven crowd whose recommending everyone to jump ship to FriendFeed, the ‘much-cooler’ alternative to Twitter.

The rise and fall of Twitter seemingly happened within the space of a few weeks!

And across the Tweetasphere, the cracks do seem to be showing.

Endless self-promo spam masquerading as friendly intro DMs.

deathoftwitter?

The Twitter higher-ups showing contempt for their users by introducing reactionary policies.

A whole bunch of clueless folks clogging the tweet-stream with inane stuff.

And there’s a hint of a whisper from the Twitter universe, that Twitter is dying a slow, painful death.

Gasp, is it true? Far from it, really. Pete Cashmore from Mashable said that Twitter is going through the Trough of Disillusionment, an extreme reaction to heightened expectations that lead to crushing disappointment.

Twitter trough of disillusionment

The new car smell is gone. The shiny object has lost some of its luster.

So what does this mean to you?

It means that in a period of a violent shake-up, the individuals with the sound fundamentals will be there to pick up the spoils.

It means that Twitter is going through its growing pains, and now it wants to grow up. And you, my friend, can mature along and profit nicely.

In my opinion, Twitter is still one of the most powerful marketing channels in the world. And now, its going to be better because the tire-kickers are leaving.

However, your marketing on Twitter needs to evolve. No more ME ME ME links. No more connecting for the sake of “giving value” and getting no returns for the bottom line. It’s been a fun ride, but now it’s time to get some ROI.

Here’s what these “adults-only” strategies mean:

  • Your conversations actually lead to sales conversions!
  • Your tweets actually drive targeted traffic to your promotions.
  • You’re legitimately generating leads without resorting to false viral scams.
  • Your business grows through voluntary word-of-mouth.
  • Your viral marketing really spreads your marketing messages like crazy.

Next week, I’m going to unveil some of the results of my testing and tracking in an exclusive call. These are the exact same secrets that propelled me ahead of the game compared to many other established players in my niche—purely through the implementation of social influence principles on Twitter.

It’s all this marketing related stuff, the commercial driven posts that’s killing twitter. What happened to friendly social exchange? To personal contact? There’s more to life than making profit.

This twitter is like a one hitter-quitter, very potent stuff… it’s coming on in waves, and will bloom for decades as we enter the immortal age. Nice post.

Twitter can (and is) being used for many purposes by individuals, and by companies… for personal connections, to inspire, to lead, to do customer service, to market, to research what is being said about the brand, etc.

All these are being used successfully. Many companies are adding it into their marketing mix right now. Many individuals are dipping their toes in.

Seriously, sending out promotional (or political or religious marketing) pitches kills Twitter how? I unfollow the people who hammer out pitch and after pitch without contributing anything else. Being able to choose who I listen to builds the value, so Twitter is getting more and more useful.

Being able to accurately target people who are interested in our specific market turbocharges my ability to reach new potential readers of our blog. The traffic results are amazing.

Smart, truthful response. I could see this coming from day one. But what you are seeing is better. You see past the hype and gimmicks to genuine marketing. Thanks once again. Following your word-bait is always rewarding.

Maybe it is just the genesis, from old testament to new testament. Just love the biblical analogy, I’m sure you could develop this theme

Yes, I do believe Twitter is here to stay. And yes, it is actually good news that the “gloom doom days” only means that it’s the tire-kickers whose jumping off the wagon. And that leaves the rest of us who are serious about Twitter.

Great post, I’ve always said, only the smart survive in internet marketing, the tire-kickers and spammers will get tired of twitter and getting banned, while the REAL users will benefit more from it, it’s slowing down a little, but it will pick back up…

I have been sucked right up in the twitter vacuum of ether. Seems most of the tweets are spam laced. Even the DM introducing and saying thanks are laced with spam. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

I am not ready to jump ship from twitter. I like it. It is a platform for me to deliver a quick, to the point, inspirational post. That helps my heart sing all day long. As I hope it help others hearts sing as well.

Those nuggets of gold, hopefully, relate to my own product which is my blog. I blog because I love to write. It is a great outlet for me. Twitter is a spot I can connect with potential readers and deliver quality, not spam.

I am ready to evolve with the crowd at twitter. Any advice, or help, would be appreciated.

Thanks for a wonderful blog.

I agree… fewer tire-kickers, less noise, more bandwidth, more quality, more value. Good riddance.

Research I’ve done on the Top 500 Twitter accounts for the past 4 weeks shows a decreasing rate of growth for the most popular Twitterers. I think their growth peaked at the end of March/beginning of April and now I’ve measured it at a median rate of 7%/week, steady but not the exponential rates that a lot of marketers & bloggers experienced from December 2008 to March 2009. Whether they have hit a natural limit for followers or this is just a plateau remains to be seen.

Lately twitter is facing some security issues. You can read it here (http://www.webpronews.com/topnews/2009/07/02/things-you-need-to-know-about-twitter-security). I just joined twitter but still haven’t feel its potential yet. All I can see is everybody’s trying to sell you their programs/products……where’re the buyers then???

I love Twitter, I’m still in the honeymoon stage, but intend to stay in for the long haul.
