Is It Right For Students And Teachers To Be Connected?

by SalvationSystem

stock photo clipart illustration of a teacher and students around a computer 31869 300x260 Is It Right For Students And Teachers To Be Connected?

Posting assignments, announcements and other ‘informative’ stuff on social media sites such as Facebook has become the norm. Teachers seem to have found an easy and effective way to interact with their students. On the students part, they now are able to even ask help in solving problems or pose any questions with their teachers. Is this ‘connection’ right in a moral sense or has some barrier been crossed?

There is no doubt that keeping the lines of communication open will indeed be useful in the classroom and will be a great help in taking care of the academic needs of each student. But there are other problems that have emerged.

As a former Abington educator heads to court following allegations of inappropriate interaction with teenagers on Facebook, school districts that do not have policies governing online social networking are working to complete them as soon as possible.

Schools officials say they want not only to protect students from predators, but also to protect teachers who have good intentions from getting involved in students’ lives in inappropriate ways or ways that create the appearance of impropriety.

The problem comes in drawing the line between what is an acceptable student-teacher relationship and what is inappropriate. Having personal information and photos available to teachers may be the start of the development of improper relationships.

Is prohibiting staff from accepting Facebook friend requests an extreme measure though? It depends on whose side you look at it. For innocent teachers who just want to help their students and students who just want to be helped, it may ‘bad thing’. On the other hand, think about those predators out there, just waiting for another victim and those innocent kids who become their prey-doesn’t your blood boil?!

Their is no other way for school authorities to protect their students and teachers as well.  Though teachers should know better what to do and say on Facebook, it may turn out to be an ‘unnecessary temptation’. Besides, how did they fare when there was no Facebook or Internet for that matter? Maybe, it’s better keep things traditional.

Now there’s no doubt that Social media has revolutionized the way we all keep in touch. From kids using it at home for keeping connected with their friends to those minor and major businesses finding ways to use it for their marketing-social networking has indeed become part of everybody’s life.

The fact is we owe a lot to social media and there ‘s no better way to show apprecation than to celebrate.

Toronto, O.N.; Las Vegas, Nevada; Reno, Nevada; San Jose, California; and its sister city Dublin, Ireland, have signed proclamations that declare June 30 Social Media Day.

Social Media Day is a global celebration of the technological advancements that enable everyone to connect with real-time information, communicate from miles apart and have their voices heard. We invite you to connect with fellow web enthusiasts by hosting a Social Media Day Meet up in your area. There’s no better way to celebrate the revolution of media becoming a social dialogue than by socializing with your online community offline.

Is this some ‘stupid’ idea people have come up with or can it prove to be useful in a way?  Like the above statement describing what the day is all about says, it’s all about connecting with those you meet online offline.

It may indeed be one of the ways that  you get to meet in person some of your favorite followers in person. And just why would  you want to do that? Well, this is the only way we can keep social media a respectable way to communicate. It’s a chance to prove that online relationships can really be REAL.

Have a happy Social Media Day everyone!!

Social Media ‘beats’ the FBI!

Everyone knows just how useful Social media has proven to be in the business field. Then is the reason why practically everyone has an online profile somewhere-to connect with family and friends. It seems social networking is continuing to find more and more ways to be of use to people. Here is yet another triumph for social media.

The Washington Post reports that the FBI decided on its new strategy of blasting photos of Bulger and Catherine Elizabeth Greig on television screens and the social networking site Twitter on Tuesday. In a few short hours, the agency’s Los Angeles office received a call from someone living in the apartment complex where Bulger and Greig were living.

Whitey Bulger has been on the FBI’s “MOST WANTED” list from 1995- an astonishing 16 years! His crimes include 19 Killings in the Boston area and Drug-trafficking as well.

According to the report, the main reason for his not being able to be captured all these years is his ‘connections’ with some FBI agents. He was an informant of one of the ‘top’ agents and got protection in return.

This is probably where Social media will prove to shine. Using these networks to post photos of ‘wanted’ people, will allow justice to be served. No agency has control over these social sites. No government personal can try and ‘hide’ information on these sites and nobody can stop the news from spreading there.

Though many find the freedom of speech on these sites in a way ‘wrong’ considering the harm that may be done with verbal harassment on a global scale, the FBI and other law enforcement agencies surely will be glad to have Social  networks around.  Things that people may be hesitant to do with other mediums can be done online without worrying about privacy.

Social networking also makes reporting crimes very easy. A simple tweet or message sent to the authorities is not only easy to do but may be all they need to locate some criminal. Social media is the ‘Hottest’ and maybe even the most valuable ‘agent’ in town.

Break the Rules and You’re Out!

by SalvationSystem

2012olympiclogo Break the Rules and Youre Out!

ATHLETES competing at the London Olympics next year will be encouraged to use social media and blogging sites on the internet but only within strict limits imposed by the International Olympic Committee.

What’s the reason behind this policy? Basically, the Committee is trying to prevent careless comments about their partners who fund the games. Being part of the competition, they too should feel some responsibility in protecting the people  that made the games possible.

What are some things that athletes are to avoid? Quite a few:

  • No comments about competitors, other participants performance or accredited persons during the games.
  • No videos or audios that have been recorded during the games though personal photos are allowed.
  • No use of the Olympic symbol of rings in any way

Do they have a right to set such guidelines? Or are they encroaching on athletes personal lives? Before entering the competition, all participants agree to follow any guidelines set before them. If the committee choose to include boundaries when it comes to social media, they have the right to. Athletes are obliged to comply.

Just how serious are they about following these social networking policies? Well, if you are guilty of breaking these rules, you can end up getting thrown out of the games! Yes, they really do mean business.

Credit:thepulsemagazine

If it worked for them, It should work for me“. Is that your idea when it comes to using Social Media in marketing your business?

The truth is, this is absolutely FALSE.

There are so many factors that may affect the efficacy of social networking on your company. One of the obvious things to consider is the kind of business you have. True, you can advertise for anything on these sites but if your target audience isn’t likely to even have profiles on these accounts, it would really be useless trying to get your business in these networks.

How about if you know your kind of business should be easily marketed on these sites but you still fail. According to a survey conducted by emarketer.com, there are heavier reasons  behind your business’ failure in these sites.

The effectiveness of using social networking to market your business will depend on your location. Some countries don’t really have a high percentage of Social media users. This may be because of a reserved culture or simply because the popular social sites aren’t popular there. Here is what the survey revealed. (see chart below)

47% of businesses successfully used social networks for customer acquisition in 2011, a 7 percentage point increase over 2010. The US followed closely behind the average, at 43%.

You really shouldn’t expect much success if your country isn’t one of those ‘on top’ of the social media users. Like the chat shows though, generally speaking, businesses are increasing their use of social media in inceasing their revenue worldwide.

How are businesses that are not using social network for their marketing doing though? The chart below shows the facts
